Netflix Plans Gilmore Girls Revival

Netflix is heading to Stars Hollow with plans for four new Gilmore Girls telefilms

Although the popular series went off the air in 2007, TVLine today reports that Gilmore Girls will be returning thanks to Netflix. What’s more, it will be bringing back series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, executive producer Daniel Palladino. The pair infamously left the series before Gilmore Girl’s seventh and final season. Current plans call for Netflix to air four 90-minute Gilmore Girls telefilms, designed to wrap up the series as Sherman-Palladino originally intended.

Gilmore Girls, which aired between 2000 and 2007, is set in Stars Hollow, a storybook Connecticut town populated by an eclectic mix of dreamers, artists and everyday folk. The multi-generational drama about family and friendship centers around Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel). Lorelai owns the town’s bed-and-breakfast, the Dragonfly Inn, with best friend/chef Sookie (Melissa McCarthy), and contends with weekly dinners with eccentric, well-off parents Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop), who always have something to say about their daughter’s life.

The outlet notes that deals for the new Gilmore Girls are still being worked out but adds that Graham, Bledel, Bishop and Scott Patterson (who played Luke Danes) are all near locks to return. Tragically, Herrmann passed away late last year. Melissa McCarthy, too, is not expected to be coming back. Since Gilmore Girls went off the air, McCarthy’s film career has truly taken off thanks to hits like Bridesmaids and Spy. The former even landed the actress an Academy Award nomination.

Gilmore Girls is just one of an ever growing number of television series being resurrected long after their respective cancellations. Netflix itself has delivered new episodes of series like Arrested Development and the upcoming Fuller House while series like The X-Files are returning to broadcast television.
