‘American Ultra’ Trailers: Jesse Eisenberg & Kristen Stewart Reunite to Become Stoner Assassins

Before Jesse Eisenberg is seen head shaved and ready to take down superheroes within the DC universe in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he dons the long locks with Kristen Stewart as they embrace their inner stoner assassins with Nima Nourizadeh‘s (Project X) late summer action-comedy American Ultra. To see the Adventureland couple reunite on screen before they buddy up again in Woody Allen‘s next project, the first trailers, one red band, the other green, have come online.

American Ultra has an admittedly fun concept, although the most interesting aspect of this project, at least to me, is that it comes from Max Landis‘s pen. I didn’t even know this was the case until I looked up the film’s details, though. Also starring John Leguizamo, Connie Britton and Topher Grace, it centers on a young stoner (Eisenberg) set to be engaged to his fellow stoner girlfriend (Stewart), only to learn he’s a sleeper super spy overtaken by his slacker persona.

The action here looks consistent, and there’s a violent-but-playful sense of humor to this endeavor which is familiar but still seems fairly enjoyable. But the trailer — at least the R-rated one — appears more amusing than outright funny, and considering how these red-band trailer like to give their best stuff away, it’s hard to tell if this one has all it takes to make worth all the bullets and buds smoked along the way.

At the very least, it looks different than the tentpole films coming out around it (The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Hitman: Agent 47), and it seems like a smug fit in the offbeat August month. Whether it makes an impression or not, it comes to theaters on August 21, and you can check out the trailers below.
