Ricky Gervais to Bring Original ‘Office’ to the Big Screen

Out of my love for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant‘s original BBC comedy “The Office” I never watched a single episode of the U.S. version starring Steve Carell. I just didn’t want that version tainting my appreciation for the original even though I’ve heard the American version was quite good, which it must have been to run as long as it had. However, outside of “Seinfeld“, I don’t think I’ve seen another television comedy that can match the original “Office”, which ran for only two seasons with one additional Christmas special, never overstayed its welcome and also proved to be so much more than just a comedy in its final moments. Now, it’s coming back, but not to television.

[amz asin=”B0002W4P98″ size=”small”]BBC Films has announced a movie titled Life on the Road, which will feature the return of Gervais as David Brent who’s still working as a sales rep, selling cleaning products up and down the country, but has never really given up on his dream of being a rock star. The film will follow him on a self-funded UK tour.

Gervais has reprised his role as Brent a couple times over the years, two such moments can be viewed at the bottom of this post.

Filming will begin in 2015 and there is currently no word on who may return from the show’s original cast, but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook and Lucy Davis to show up at least briefly along with several others. If you’ve never watched the show, now’s the time, the DVD set costs as little as $6.51 brand new at Amazon and is worth every penny and then some. [Digital Spy]
