Looking over the month of August 2012 there are four movies I’ve already seen, so I can’t necessarily pretend to anticipate them. To be entirely honest, I originally attempted to make this a list of my top ten most anticipated films for the month, but simply couldn’t. To that point, five was even a stretch considering Lawless was among my “already seen.” But instead of a top four I scrounged and came up with a fifth place feature to make it a nice round list of five.
As for the films I’ve seen, along with Lawless (my review from Cannes ParaNorman. So those four you won’t find below.
August is a curious month, it’s a late Summer and early Fall dumping ground, but that doesn’t mean it’s a month to be overlooked.
Last year August brought us Bellflower, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Help. In 2010 we got Animal Kingdom and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World; 2009 delivered District 9 and Inglourious Basterds; 2008 delivered my favorite film of that year, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, along with Tropic Thunder; and in 2007 we saw The Bourne Ultimatum and Superbad.
So what does this August have in store? Here are my most anticipated five films for the month.
5.
The Possession
August 31

I’m a sucker for a creepy looking horror film, but I’m also just as quick to call a film’s bluff. The Possession claims to be based on a true story, which I hope isn’t the only card up their sleeve. If it is, this one may end up a bust.
4.
2 Days in New York
August 10

I messed up and could have actually seen this already, but I forgot to put it on my calendar. Oops. Nevertheless, I’m still looking out for it as it has had positive word of mouth since premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and I liked the first one (2 Days in Paris) and hope replacing Adam Goldberg with Chris Rock will prove a wise decision.
