As I told you yesterday, the box-office report was missing a few titles, specifically Christmas Day openers War Horse and The Darkest Hour, and so I’m here with the updated numbers and even a bit of movement when it comes to the top ten I reported on yesterday.
Before we get to War Horse I’ll begin at the top where Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol actually brought in $3 million more than the estimated $26.5 million for the three-day weekend for a three-day of $29.5 million and what is now estimated to be a $46.2 million four-day weekend with Paramount anticipating $16.7 million worth of business today. With Christmas falling on a Sunday this week it obviously wrecked havoc with the estimates and the turnout as well, which tells me today’s numbers and next weekend’s will certainly paint a more accurate picture of the state of the box-office than three-day weekend.
On top of Mission‘s additional numbers, Fox’s We Bought a Zoo performed a little better than the originally reported $7.8 million as today’s actuals for the three-day are up to $9.4 million and after today the film is targeting $15.6 million for the four-day weekend. That’s at least a little better than we thought originally, though the film still remains in sixth place.
Taking seventh place for the three-day weekend is Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, which burst out of the gates to $7.5 million from 2,376 theaters and is expected to equal that today for a $15 million four-day take. According to The Hollywood Reporter the film received an A- CinemaScore from moviegoers and I expect it will continue to perform well over the next couple of weeks, at least we can hope so as the box-office could use as many strong performers as it can get.
Also debuting on Christmas Day was the sci-fi actioner The Darkest Hour, which debuted with $3 million on Sunday and is expected to bring in $2.5 million more today.
In limited release, we finally have numbers for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close which brought in $71,000 on Christmas Day and is projected to take in another $66,000 today for a $137,000 two-day debut from six screens.
