Hailee Steinfeld’s First Post-‘True Grit’ Feature Will be ‘Romeo and Juliet’

A year ago it was reported Lily Collins would play the female lead in Romeo and Juliet for Italian director Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent), but a year later Collins is now set to play Snow White in Tarsem Singh’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White opening the door for another actress to step in. That actress, the recently Oscar-nominated True Grit stand-out Hailee Steinfeld with her first post-Oscar deal.

Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter reports Steinfeld will play one half of the “star-crossed lovers” in the Julian Fellowes (The Young Victoria) penned adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play with the expectation for the film to begin shooting in Italy later this spring.

Steinfeld recently lost out to Jennifer Lawrence to play Katniss Everdeen in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, the first film in a proposed trilogy based on the Suzanne Collins novel. The route she is now taking, however, reminds me of Mia Wasikowska’s recent path as she’s gone from Alice in Wonderland and The Kids are All Right to the critically acclaimed Jane Eyre adaptation, which is quite good and still in theaters if you haven’t yet seen it.

This isn’t the only film in the pipeline for Steinfeld, as it was recently announced she’s attached to the title role in Sleeping Beauty (as if the Wasikowska comparison wasn’t sold already). The revisionist take on the classic story was penned by Lindsay Devlin, though no director is yet attached.
