Box-Office Wrap-Up: ‘Wimpy Kid’ Tops ‘Sucker Punch’ for Box-Office Win

The top ten was down 6.8% from last year and about 23% from 2009 in yet another light box-office weekend. Does that owe to the NCAA tournament or is it once again because of a lack of interest in the films in theaters? I lean toward the latter, but that’s just me…

Sucker Punch, the film that had some commenting on my review saying it was supposed to be “fun” and that I just didn’t catch on to that. In fact, I knew it was “supposed” to be fun, but I just don’t see blinding visual effects, ear shattering noise and the fact young girls are being raped and abused while the film takes a video game break to be all that fun. That’s just me though, everyone is entitled to an opinion and I actually enjoyed reading the conversations this one spurred on. That’s why we’re here right?
As for the box-office, I was far too generous yesterday, thinking those $8 million Friday receipts would result in about $22.5 million for the weekend. Seems word of mouth wasn’t helping this flick. This result doesn’t surprise Kid though, who came up with an on-the-nose $19 million prediction. Kudos to Bustray as well who was also quite close with an $18.7 million pick as many were all over the board on this one.
Question now is just how well will it hold up?
Result: $19 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 with $22.5 million, which is $3.5m off for a 18.42% error.
Forget the two films at the top, the biggest news of the weekend comes at #3 and #4 as Limitless dropped only 19.5% from last weekend and has now taken in $41 million in its first ten days. I’m curious, do you guys see Bradley Cooper as a potential box-office star going forward?
Result: $15.2 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $10.78 million, which is $4.42m off for a 29.08% error.
The Lincoln Lawyer held over even better than Limitless, dropping only 16.7% from last weekend, but the cume here is still only $28.9 million in its first ten days. Even though this film didn’t knock my socks off, I wish it had done better because I would like to see more big screen courtroom dramas as opposed to the rash of them on primetime television.
Result: $11 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $7.52 million, which is $3.48m off for a 31.64% error.
We now have two $100+ million earners at the domestic box-office and Rango is currently at the top of the heap with $106.3 million. Just Go With It is the other one, giving Adam Sandler his twelfth $100+ million earner. The guy just prints money when it comes to silly comedies.
Result: $9.8 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $8.89 million, which is $0.91m off for a 9.29% error.
Battle: Los Angeles is now up to $72.5 million. I’m anxious to hear word of the sequel, Clean Up: Los Angeles. All those dead aliens have to be a massive bio-hazard.
Result: $7.6 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $6.68 million, which is $0.92m off for a 12.11% error.
I have still not seen this and it’s growing more and more likely I will have to wait until DVD and Blu-ray to do so. It’s only managed $24 million in its first ten days so I doubt it will be sitting in theaters for too long.
Result: $7.5 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $6.78 million, which is $0.72m off for a 9.6% error.
You wouldn’t know it by looking at the box-office numbers, but at the moment the best movies 2011 has had to offer are all in theaters. You have The Adjustment Bureau, Rango, Win Win, Cedar Rapids, Jane Eyre and Certified Copy. How many of these have you seen?
Result: $4.2 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $2.97 million, which is $1.23m off for a 29.29% error.
This spot could go to Beastly whose estimate was $2.185, which is why I went three digits deep after the decimal. Not like it really matters.
Result: $2.186 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.22 million, which is $1.034m off for a 47.3% error.
Looking below number ten, Jane Eyre took in another $983,000 from 90 theaters and a $10,922 per theater average. The new release Miral (which I saw in Toronto and isn’t all that great) was in only four theaters and took in $65,000. But the weekend’s big per theater winner was Win Win in its second weekend where it took home $471,000 from 23 theaters and a $20,478 per theater average.
Next week sees and interesting group vying for the top spot including Hop, Insidious and Source Code. Another film hitting theaters is the Oscar Best Picture winner In a Better World, which I also saw in Toronto and loved. You can read my review of that one here.
