Diane Lane Cast as Superman’s Mom

Warner Bros. just announced Diane Lane has been cast as Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent (aka Superman) has ever known, in Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man of Steel. Lane will play the Earth born mother to Kent to be played by Henry Cavill (“The Tudors”) in the film, which is currently targeting a December 2012 release date.

Snyder was quoted in the release saying, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

This comes on the heels of a recent rumor Kevin Costner was being eyed for a “key role” in the film, a role many speculated to be Jonathan “Pa” Kent, a speculation Latino Review reported to be true.

Also, Viggo Mortensen’s name has been associated with the film’s villain, a return of General Zod, the baddie played by Terrence Stamp in Superman II.

The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
