Leonardo DiCaprio is already set to take the title role in J. Edgar, the new title for Clint Eastwood’s once titled Hoover biopic centered on J. Edgar Hoover, the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who was last seen on the big screen as portrayed by Billy Crudup in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning Milk scripter, penned the screenplay.
Two reports today from Entertainment Weekly and Vulture bring word The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer and Charlize Theron have each been offered roles in the film, which is expected to begin filming in early 2011.
Hammer, whom you’ll remember as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, has been offered the role of Clyde Tolson, Associate Director of the FBI and known Hoover protoge. Theron, Vulture’s Claude Brodesser-Akner reports, “is being offered the part of Helen Gandy, a Justice Department file clerk Hoover selected as his personal secretary at the age of 21, and who wound up working for him for over 54 years.”
Theron was most recently said to be up for a co-starring role opposite Tom Hardy (Inception) in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which was said to also begin filming early next year for an already set December 21, 2012 release. There’s no telling if this would take her out of the running for that film.
