Snyder Helming ‘Watchmen’

Paul Greengrass was the last director set to helm the feature film adaptation of the DC Comics series Watchmen when it was being housed over at Paramount. His involvement ceased when Paramount put the pic in turnaround. That move was just one of many over the development hell of the long gestating project.

Well, things may have changed for the better for you Watchmen fans as Warner Bros. now has the rights to the pic and Zach Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) has been confirmed as the director of the pic with Alex Tse writing the script.

Snyder’s involvement in the film was originally rumored back in March when Aint-It-Cool-News dropped the scoop.

The film is based on the classic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel. The story is set in a time when super-heroes are banned, one group of super-humans must work together to save a doomed Earth from a mysterious force. But the question still remains, “Who Watches the Watchmen?”

Word from The Hollywood Reporter is that Snyder has impressed Warners with 300, an adaptation of a Frank Miller graphic novel that he directed and co-wrote. Snyder shot the movie — a Greek epic about the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. — on soundstages in Montreal using partial sets and greenscreens, similar in technique to Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City.

Previous filmmakers aboard Watchmen included Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky and screenwriter David Hayter.
