AMC today announced a straight-to-series order for a new drama, āBrokeā (working title). A co-production between AMC Studios and Lionsgate, āBrokeā is being adapted by writer/showrunner Clyde Phillips (āDexter,ā āNurse Jackieā), who will also serve as executive producer. AMC has ordered 10 one-hour episodes, with an expected premiere date in 2016.
Based on the Danish series āBankerotā created by Kim Fupz Aakeson and produced by DR Broadcasting, āBrokeā is a drama about two best friends who take one last shot at their dream of opening a restaurant together. One is a brilliant chef in trouble with the Mob and the law, and the other is the best sommelier in the city who is the widowed father of a teenage son. āBrokeā is the story of friendship, fatherhood, grief, larceny, arson, drugs, adultery, murder, love ā and blazingly original cooking.
āClyde Phillips is a supremely talented creator weāve known and admired for years,ā said Charlie Collier, AMC president. āThrough his work on āDexterā and āNurse Jackie,ā Clyde has repeatedly demonstrated his skill for crafting complex, flawed, yet irresistible characters, and weāre looking forward to him bringing his continued brilliance to āBroke.ā Weāre also so happy to be partnering once again with our good friends at Lionsgate after the extraordinary journey we shared on āMad Men.'ā
āWe have had the great fortune to work with both Clyde Phillips and AMC for many years and weāre delighted the stars have aligned to bring us together on āBroke,āā said Kevin Beggs, Chairman, Lionsgate Television Group. āClyde is a master storyteller with a fascinating take on the seriesā original characters and their unexpected relationships, and weāre excited to be moving forward.ā
āāBrokeā is unique, edgy and sexy. I canāt wait to jump in and help it evolve into a groundbreaking bit of television,ā said Phillips. āMore than that, Iām looking forward to continuing whatās been a remarkable partnership with Lionsgate, and starting out on an exciting new adventure with AMC.ā
āBrokeā will be produced by AMC Studios and Lionsgate in association with Clyde Phillips Productions. Executive producers are Phillips, Henrik Ruben Genz (āBankerot,ā āBorgenā), Malene Blenkov (āBankerotā) and Piv Bernth (āThe Killing,ā āForbrydelsenā and āBron/Broenā).
