Dexter: Original Sin creator Clyde Phillips is not happy about the show’s cancellation.
Dexter: Original Sin premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime in December 2024. A prequel to the popular Dexter series, the show stars Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, Christina Milian as María LaGuerta, and James Martinez as Angel Batista.
Dexter: Original Sin was renewed for a second season in April 2025; however, it was then announced in August 2025 that Season 2 was no longer happening. No reason for the cancellation was given at the time.
What did Dexter: Original Sin’s creator say about the show’s cancellation?
Speaking on the Dissecting Dexter podcast, per Variety, Phillips spoke about the matter and his frustration with the decision to cancel the series.
“It was a tough phone call that I got that night. They had already picked up the show, and I’d informed all the writers and informed all the actors, and then they un-picked it up,” Phillips said. “It wasn’t handled well, and I’m not happy about it.”
Phillips said he believes the decision to cancel Dexter: Original Sin had to do with the Paramount and Skydance merger. He said that former Paramount boss Chris McCarthy “wanted the Dexter-verse to expand” and wanted him to “be his new Taylor Sheridan.”
“We plotted out a couple of years of this, looking forward to introducing new characters,” Phillips added.
The merger put a stop to those plans, according to Phillips. The creator says the only Dexter show that seems to have any future momentum at this time is Dexter: Resurrection, which premiered this past July.
“I don’t see them doing it,” Phillips said regarding a previously planned show, Trinity, that would have revolved around the character that John Lithgow played in the original Dexter series.
