In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Tom Holland explained that the film opens up with Peter Parker at the lowest point of his life, though Spider-Man himself is stronger than ever. He said, “I think you really meet Peter Parker at the beginning of the darkest chapter of his life,” Holland said.
The actor explained that the movie focuses on the emotional side of living a life in isolation, and Peter struggles after choosing to carry everything on his own. He calls the movie “a cautionary tale for the dangers of living a life alone and not having a community, not having friends.”
Holland also referred to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending, saying Peter has ignored one of the most important lessons from Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. “A lesson that he learned from Andrew’s character in the previous movie is that, you know, sometimes the bravest thing that you can do is ask for help. And he is actively ignoring that advice. And it is having a profound effect on his life as a human being,” he added.
Tom Holland explained that Peter is going through a rough phase. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is thriving. That contrast between Peter’s isolated life and Spider-Man’s public success is something that Holland found most exciting to explore. He described the character going from “standing on the world stage” as a celebrated figure to returning home to “a pretty grubby New York apartment” at the end of the day.
Holland believes these moments resonate with younger people who quietly go through the same everyday life. He went on to add, “I love telling a movie on this scale that is something that I really think will resonate with young people.”
