Alongside Click, 50 First Dates is another classic Adam Sandler movie that is finally becoming available in ultra high definition. Originally released in 2004, the film reteamed Sandler with his The Wedding Singer costar Drew Barrymore. Thankfully, if you have amnesia like Barrymore’s Lucy or just love the film, you can rewatch the 50 First Dates 4K as many times as you want.
“Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star together for the first time since The Wedding Singer in one of the funniest romantic comedies in years. Henry (Sandler) lives an enviable life in a Hawaiian paradise, spending every night with a beautiful tourist in search of an island fling. It’s a sweet life with no strings attached…until he meets Lucy (Barrymore). He and Lucy hit it off from the get-go, but the next day, she acts like she doesn’t know him. Has his karma come around to kick him in the butt or what? Actually, Lucy has short-term memory loss, so every night all memory of her day is erased. But a man in love will go to any lengths to win over the girl of his dreams, and if that means having to find imaginative ways of doing it over again every day, then Henry’s up for the challenge. Rob Schneider (Big Daddy) and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) co-star in 50 First Dates, which will win you over every time you watch it!” says the official description.
Besides the fantastic premise that allows for a bunch of hilarious first dates, the film was a real joy in 2004 just for reuniting Barrymore and Sandler. The chemistry between the two is fantastic, and it’s easy to see why the film has become a favorite rom-com to rewatch for many over the years. The movie also features a strong supporting cast, as Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, and Dan Aykroyd all meaningfully add to the film’s comedy.
Sony Pictures always puts out high-quality releases, and the 50 First Dates 4K is no exception. Sporting a Dolby Vision transfer with HDR10 support, it really allows the gorgeous Hawaiian setting to shine. The film has never looked better, as you get the full amount of detail without any compression. It also features a Dolby Atmos mix for audio (along with a DTS-HD 5.1 track as well) that allows the fun soundtrack to fully entertain.
The 50 First Dates 4K features all of the special features from the 2006 Blu-ray release, plus two extras. New to the Blu-ray are a 12-minute HBO First Look featurette taking a look at the film and its theatrical trailer. Also returning are an audio commentary track with director Peter Segal and Drew Barrymore, a 20-minute Comedy Central special, a 20-minute making-of featurette, bloopers, and several deleted scenes.
