The X-Files R-Rated cut finally has a new release date. This has been confirmed with a new streamer and a new title after a delay in the Disney+ Director’s Cut.
What is the new title and release date for The X-Files R-rated director’s cut?
The X-Files: I Want to Believe Director’s Cut was supposed to be released on Disney+ in July, but it was delayed due to some technical issues. Now, the R-Rated version is confirmed to air on Hulu on August 14, 2026. It will have a new title, The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn. (Russian for Victor Frankenstein)
Chris Carter directed the 2008 standalone movie. Before its big-screen release, the director had to cut scenes to get a PG-13 rating. However, the new cut will show the entire movie as it was initially intended.
In a 2025 podcast with the movie’s lead actor, David Duchovny, Carter stated, “I made it too scary. Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended.” This broke the news of the Director’s Cut.
In 2026, the R-Rated version appeared on Disney+’s upcoming show listing for June 2026. However, when the day arrived, the show was reported to be delayed due to some last-minute adjustments.
The movie’s synopsis reads, “Though FBI special agent Fox Mulder and his partner, Dr. Dana Scully, once chased things that go bump in the night, his tireless search for the truth out there has led to his professional exile. However, a missing-persons case leads to the agents’ reunion, along with an encounter with a priest who may or may not be experiencing psychic visions.”
Carter also wrote the film’s script and was the original creator of the TV series. The movie stars David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, Alvin “Xzibit” Joiner, Mitch Pileggi, and Callum Keith Rennie.
