DC’s Jimmy Olsen TV Show Still Has One Giant Roadblock Despite Jimmy Tatro Casting

DC Studios officially locks in Jimmy Tatro for its upcoming Jimmy Olsen TV show. The news may have sparked excitement but there is one major hurdle that could still derail the whole thing.

The Jimmy Olsen spinoff still faces one major obstacle

According to Deadline, Jimmy Tatro has officially closed a deal to join HBO Max’s planned Superman spinoff as the iconic DC villain Gorilla Grodd. Introduced in 1959 by writer John Brrome and artist Carmine INfantion, Grodd is a super-intelligent ape with powerful psychic abilities that he gains after an encounter with an alien spacecraft. The character most recently appeared in DC’s Arrowverse.

Despite the high-profile casting news, the series still faces one significant obstacle. HBO Max hasn’t officially greenlit the project. DC Studios announced the show and continued adding cast members, but the streamer has yet to give the final approval needed to move into full production. Until then, the series remains in development limbo, despite generating plenty of excitement among DC fans.

The untitled series follows Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen after his debut in James Gunn’s Superman. Rather than being a traditional superhero action series, it centres on Jimmy and fellow Daily Planet journalists as they investigate crimes involving metahumans across the DC universe. Gorilla Grodd will reportedly serve as the central mystery during the first season.

Tatro joins a growing cast led by Gisondo. The ensemble also includes Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, Zach Cherry, Christopher McDonald, Rachel Hilson, and Michael Cassidy, many of whom reprise their roles from Superman. The casting reunites Tatro with American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunners on the series.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has reportedly indicated that production could begin in Atlanta later this year, once Man of Tomorrow wraps primary filming. Tatro’s casting news in DC’s Jimmy Olsen TV show comes on the same day his new Netflix series, The Hawk, Will Ferrell’s golf comedy, premieres.
