Director Matt Reeves has pushed the release date of The Batman 2, which puts nearly six years between the original and its sequel. The announcement came with a brief glimpse of Robert Pattinson back in the Batsuit, but the teaser did little to soften the blow for DC fans.
Fans are extremely unhappy with The Batman 2’s delay
The original film opened in March 2022 to critical and commercial success. The Batman 2 was initially slated for October 2026, then shifted to October 2027. This latest delay to February 18, 2028, gives Reeves more time for post-production, but the extended timeline has triggered sarcastic and exasperated reactions online.
One user wrote on X, “the 6 year gap is still insane to me.” Another referenced the new teaser, noting “They grow longer with each new delay,” a quip about the apparent lengthening of Batman’s mask ears. The humour turned fatalistic with the comment, “we’re getting GTA VI before The Batman 2.” Another fan imagined a conversation between Bruce Wayne and Alfred: “What’s wrong master Bruce? Alfred… I can’t wait till 2028.” A conflicted admirer posted, “i wanna hate u for the delay but i can’t ur just too goated.”
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn had previously defended lengthy gaps between sequels, citing examples from Hollywood history. “To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “7 years between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ 14 years between ‘Incredibles.’ 7 years between the first two ‘Terminators.’ 13 years between ‘Avatars.’ 36 years between ‘Top Guns.’ And, of course, six years between ‘Guardians Vol 2’ and ‘Vol 3’” (via Variety).
Moreover, Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Plot details remain secret, but the cast has expanded significantly. Joining Robert Pattinson are Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch. Their roles have not been disclosed.
For now, audiences can see Pattinson in The Odyssey and the upcoming Dune Part 3.
