Benedict Cumberbatch & James McAvoy’s Forgotten War Epic Is Leaving Netflix Soon

A 2007 epic movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy will be removed from Netflix soon. The film was a critical and commercial success upon release and even won an Academy Award.

Atonement is leaving Netflix next month

The romantic war tragedy film Atonement is exiting Netflix on August 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix). Other movies leaving the platform that day are 27 Dresses, A Million Ways to Die in the West, American Gangster, 48 Hrs, Kindergarten Cop, Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter, and There’s Something About Mary.

Joe Wright directed Atonement from a script by Christopher Hampton, who adapted it from Ian McEwan’s 2001 novel of the same name. The movie stars McAvoy as Robbie Turner, opposite Keira Knightley’s Cecilia Tallis, and revolves around their relationship, a crime, and its consequences spanning decades. Cumberbatch plays Paul Marshall in the film. The cast also includes Saoirse Ronan as Briony Tallis, Brenda Blethyn as Grace Turner, Juno Temple as Lola Quincey, Patrick Kennedy as Leon Tallis, and Daniel Mays as Tommy Nettle.

This was Wright’s second movie with Knightley after 2005’s Pride & Prejudice. They would work together again in 2012 on an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s 1878 novel Anna Karenina. Wright also worked with Ronan again in the 2011 action thriller Hanna.

Atonement had its world premiere on August 29, 2007, at the 64th Venice International Film Festival before releasing in the UK on September 7, 2007, and in the US on December 14, 2007. The movie made over $129 million globally (via Box Office Mojo) and currently has an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a review, Brad Brevet of ComingSoon shared, “From the production design, the cinematography, the music, the acting and the directing, this movie absolutely hits on all aspects of perfect filmmaking, leaving absolutely no doubt as to its excellence.”

At the 80th Academy Awards, Atonement received seven nominations, including one for Best Picture. It won the Best Original Score award for Dario Marianelli’s work.
