The Odyssey Caused a Huge Spider-Man Crisis, Then Brand New Day Was Saved

Tom Holland recently spoke about how his casting in The Odyssey caused a major crisis for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Holland stars in both tentpole movies. The first is Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the eponymous Greek epic generally attributed to Homer, while the latter is the fourth MCU Spider-Man movie.

Tom Holland says The Odyssey and Spider-Man 4 would’ve filmed on the same day

Tom Holland made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote The Odyssey. He recalled in detail the circumstances surrounding his casting and revealed that they had to change the production dates for Spider-Man: Brand New Day for Nolan’s film.

“We had to literally move Spider-Man,” Holland said. “The start date was like the same date [for both movies]. So, I had to call the studio [Sony].” He proceeded to thank Tom Rothman, the chairman and CEO of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, calling him an “absolute legend.” Holland elaborated, “Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to make this movie. But he literally moved Spider-Man, so I can be part of this film.”

All this came after Fallon asked about Holland’s reaction to getting the initial phone call about The Odyssey. The actor jokingly responded, “Honestly, I thought he was supposed to call Timothée Chalamet.” He added, “I got the call from my agents, and it really goes to show how much agents really know; they told me it’s a vampire movie. Or an ensemble space movie, the other idea that they came up with.” Holland clarified that while it was neither of those, he “would have been there day one” if it were.

The Cherry actor then confirmed that he met Nolan in Los Angeles. According to Holland, “after an hour” of conversation, Nolan delivered his two-word pitch, which was “The Odyssey.” The 30-year-old said that he immediately thought he hadn’t read the epic. “But it was amazing. He let me take the script home. I said yes on the spot,” he disclosed.

The Odyssey debuts in U.S. theaters on July 17. Meanwhile, Spider-Man 4 comes out at the end of the month, on July 31.
