Why House of the Dragon Fans Think Sunfyre Is Not Dead

Curious about whether Sunfyre is truly dead in House of the Dragon Season 3? When Aegon and his companion Larys stumble upon the dragon near the battlefield, his lifeless appearance tells one story, but Aegon’s instincts tell another. This moment raises major questions about the dragon’s fate and what it could mean for the rest of the war.

Here is a breakdown of whether Sunfyre is really dead and what his survival could mean for the show.

Is Sunfyre really dead in House of the Dragon Season 3?

Since House of the Dragon Season 2, everyone assumed that Sunfyre died. However, in Season 3, Episode 4, titled Tumbleton, Aegon believes that the dragon is alive.

Aegon and Larys find Sunfyre near Rook’s Rest, lying with wounds and appearing nearly dead. The dragon appears to have remained in the same spot for a long time. While his condition suggests otherwise, Aegon insists that Sunfyre still lives.

Aegon reveals that he shares a very special bond with his dragon, and his senses tell him that there are still signs of life in him. However, Larys struggles to trust Aegon’s instincts, as the dragon’s visible condition clearly points to a lifeless body.

Aegon’s shocking claim comes two years after several characters clearly stated that Sunfyre is dead. Many presumed the Battle at Rook’s Rest killed him, a fight that also saw the demise of Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon, Meleys.

Vhagar attacked Sunfyre, and he crashed to the ground, brutally injured. Criston Cole later confirmed that the dragon no longer lived. Daemon Targaryen reconfirmed this recently in Season 3, Episode 3, saying that the only dragon Baela saw was Sunfyre, long dead and decaying.

While the show wrote off Sunfyre earlier, calling him dead, the Fire & Blood book told a different story. In the battle, the dragon didn’t die but lost half of his wing, which disabled him from flying entirely. However, he remained near the battlefield and gradually recovered.
