One of the most underrated and underserved members of the titular group in X-Men ’97 is finally getting their due in Season 2 of the series. X-Men ’97 Season 2 debuted on July 1, 2026, on Disney+, with X-Men team members scattered across time.
Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler, the character in question, finds himself in ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. with Beast, Professor Charles Xavier, and others. In a recent interview, Nightcrawler voice actor Adrian Hough teased what’s next for the beloved mutant, promising exciting developments in Season 2 and beyond.
Nightcrawler finally receives a larger character arc in X-Men ’97 Season 2
Speaking to The Direct, Hough spoke about the larger arc his character is getting in the sophomore season of X-Men ’97. He revealed that by the end of the season, Nightcrawler would have an “incredible” character growth.
Hough elaborated, “In the old series, we only ever see him sort of morose and sad, but like hopeful, and you know, proselytizing to Wolverine in the chapel, and then finding out that Mystique is his mother, and [he starts to bond] with Rogue, but I think it comes to fruition in this season. That’s all I’ll say.”
When the above-mentioned outlet enquired how Nightcrawler would continue to evolve in Seasons 3 and 4 after his Season 2 arc, Hough spoke about his immediate reactions after getting new scripts for the show.
“Well, I have to say, every time I get a new script, I have this moment of, oh, wow, that’s where we’re going, you know,” he said, adding that every time he came in, “there’s like a new version of his journey, let’s say, and you know, it’s fantastic.” Hough noted that this made Kurt a “super fun” character “to play” as an actor and voice actor.
In the same interview, Hough also underscored Kurt’s “personal trauma and sadness” and that he has thought “a lot” about how the character deals with them.
