An iconic British star just joined one of the biggest action franchises in Hollywood. A beloved actor signs on for Lionsgate’s highly anticipated John Wick spinoff currently filming across two continents.
Bill Nighy added to the cast of Caine
Bill Nighy has joined the cast of Caine, Lionsgate’s John Wick spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reports. Donnie Yen directs and stars as the titular blind assassin he first portrayed in John Wick: Chapter 4. The action film is currently in production across Budapest and Hong Kong.
Mason Thames of The Black Phone and Dacre Montgomery of Stranger Things also star in the feature. Meanwhile, Rina Sawayama reprises her role as Akira from John Wick: Chapter 4. Her character worked in the hitman hotel that assassins overran and blamed Caine for her father’s death.
Mattson Tomlin and Michael McGrale wrote the script for the spinoff. Notably, Tomlin also penned the upcoming The Batman Part II and the adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ comic BRZRKR. The story picks up after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 following Caine’s freedom from The High Table.
The High Table serves as the council running a global empire controlled by elite crime families. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road produce alongside John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski. Stahelski produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment banner, while Keanu Reeves and John Saunders also produce. Additionally, Yen and Courtney Brock serve as executive producers on the project.
Nighy remains one of the most recognizable British actors working across stage and screen today. He gained widespread recognition through his breakout performance in Love Actually and the romantic drama About Time. He also appeared in the Underworld franchise throughout his prolific career.
This summer, Nighy will star in the series Ride or Die opposite Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham. He will also appear opposite Helena Bonham Carter in Hugo Blick’s California Avenue for the BBC. UTA, Independent Talent Group and Jackoway Austen represent the actor.
