Urchin Blu-ray Review: Harris Dickinson’s Brilliant Directorial Debut

Harris Dickinson’s directorial debut, Urchin, is now available on Blu-ray. Starring Frank Dillane, the film is an honest look at addiction and mental health. Receiving acclaim upon release, the movie also holds the distinction of being the first film released by distributor 1-2 Special.

“A young addict living on the streets of London is given a shot at redemption, but his road to recovery soon curdles into a strange odyssey from which he may never escape,” says the official description.

Urchin is an incredibly strong debut by Dickinson, who is clearly a true artist and not just an attractive face. Despite not even being 30 yet, Dickinson is able to get a brilliant performance out of Frank Dillane and depict addiction in a mature way that finds sympathy for its characters even when they’re making mistakes. After watching this, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Dickinson, who is just as interesting behind the camera as he is captivating in front of one.

The Urchin Blu-ray also looks great, as the transfer allows for DP Josée Deshaies’ gorgeous shots to really shine. The film’s authentic, realistic performances are best enjoyed in high definition, where you can really appreciate all its subtleties.

While the Urchin Blu-ray isn’t packed with bonus features, there are two offerings, at least. First is the film’s theatrical trailer, which is always nice to have available, and the second is a one-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. The latter features Harris Dickinson discussing the film’s goals and his perspective on the film. Sadly, there’s no commentary track, as I would’ve loved to have heard Dickinson’s thoughts on the film.

Urchin Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

Urchin is a brilliant directorial debut for Dickinson, who has a bright future. Its Blu-ray release is a solid transfer of a great movie, even if it could have used some additional special features. Definitely check it out if you haven’t.
