Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 has fans talking about the potential for multiple character deaths. So far, only one has been confirmed, but several clues suggest more heartbreak could be on the way.
Will Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 feature more deaths after Monica Beltran?
The Season 22 premiere, which aired on October 9, opens with a shocking gas explosion at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during a hostage situation. The blast and ensuing fire left several key characters injured and claimed the life of Natalie Morales’ character, Monika Beltran.
However, the episode hints that the death toll might rise. For example, Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln suffers serious injuries, including a broken collarbone. There’s even an emotional scene between him and his partner that feels like his final moment, but thankfully, he pulls through. But given the show’s history of changing things last minute, Link’s fate is still uncertain.
Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson, also hinted that death reveals will be a major focus in the upcoming episodes, so fans should brace for more losses. She described the premiere as “explosive” and “emotional,” suggesting that the first few episodes of Season 22 are going to be tough for long-time fans.
Camilla claimed, “It’s the Grey’s you know and love, but maybe also the Grey’s you love to hate a little bit,” she teased. “I think there’s going to be some throwing things at your TV screen, which is what Grey’s does best, too.”
Showrunner Meg Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter that deciding who lives or dies on Grey’s Anatomy is a careful, collaborative process. She said the writers’ room is “kind” but filled with lively debate. The team goes through every possibility, who’s on the OR floor, what happens if one character dies versus another, and how each choice affects the story and others around them.
Grey’s Anatomy has never shied away from killing off major characters. Derek Shepherd, Lexie Grey, Mark Sloan, and George O’Malley were all beloved characters who were killed.
