Why Is Al Calderon Leaving Days of Our Lives?

Curious why Al Calderon’s name has been making headlines among Days of Our Lives fans? Reports quickly spread after news broke that his character, Javi Hernandez, would soon be recast. But Calderon’s exit has less to do with drama in Salem and more with a major career move.

Here’s what led to his departure from the soap, what his next role involves, and how Brilliant Minds factored into the decision.

Here’s why Al Calderon is leaving Days of Our Lives

Al Calderon is leaving Days of Our Lives, and the show will recast the role of Javi Hernandez.

Deadline reports that Calderon’s departure aligns with his new role as a series regular in Season 2 of NBC’s Brilliant Minds. He has already filmed his final episodes as Javi, which will air in May next year.

“We do not comment on the contract status of our actors, but fans should not worry, Javi is alive and well in Salem,” representatives for Days of Our Lives said in a statement. Calderon originally joined the long-running soap in February, portraying Javi as a passionate and professional character who is alternately larger than life and deeply sensitive.

Calderon moves to prime time television with his role in Brilliant Minds, where he plays Nurse Scotty Silva. Silva runs Bronx General Hospital and uses his charm and insider knowledge to stay connected with everyone around him. He works closely with Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by Zachary Quinto.

Brilliant Minds takes inspiration from the work of neurologist Oliver Sacks. The show follows Dr. Wolf and his team as they handle complex medical cases while navigating their own personal challenges. The cast includes Quinto, Calderon, Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, Teddy Sears, and Donna Murphy. Bellamy Young appears in a recurring guest role.

Production on the second season is currently underway in Toronto.
