Joaquin Phoenix Investigates a Murder in Final Eddington Trailer

A24 has released the final trailer for Eddington, a new Western black comedy from Ari Aster.

The official description reads, “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.”

What happens in the Eddington trailer?

Eddington’s trailer opens with Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) investigating a murder on tribal land. Cross plans to run for mayor, a position currently held by Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal). “You can’t keep your own office going, but you’re gonna run mine? They’re your streets to keep safe,” Garcia tells Cross before clips show the sheriff failing to keep the peace at a protest. The rest of the trailer plunges into chaos with gunshots, fire, and a lot of unhappy residents. Paranoia and political turmoil are apparent throughout the footage.

Besides Phoenix and Pascal, Eddington’s cast stars Luke Grimes as Officer Guy, Deirdre O’Connell as Dawn, Michael Ward as Michael, Amélie Hoeferle as Sarah, Clifton Collins Jr. as Lodge, William Belleau as Officer Butterfly Jimenez, Austin Butler as Vernon Jefferson Peak, and Emma Stone as Louise Cross.

Aster writes, directs, and produces Eddington, his fourth movie with A24, following Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid. While Beau Is Afraid flopped at the box office, Hereditary remains one of A24’s highest-grossing films worldwide, and Midsommar earned over $48 million on a budget of $9 million. Additional producers include Lars Knudsen and Ann Ruark.

Eddington premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or. The initial reviews have been polarizing so far. Eddington releases in theaters on July 18, 2025.
