Why Aunt Lydia Joins [Spoiler] in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 8

“Exodus,” the eighth episode of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, delivers what fans have craved for years. After six seasons of clinging to Gilead’s ideology, Lydia finally sees the brutal truth about how the regime has exploited and abused women, particularly Handmaids.

Why does Aunt Lydia join June in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 8?

Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) has a new reckoning in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 8 as June (Elisabeth Moss) plans to murder the Commanders. For the longest time, Lydia has preached Gilead’s “values” and refused to see how her “girls” were being sexually assaulted by powerful Commanders inside Gilead’s misogynist rules.

But in Episode 8, Janine and June’s insistence finally brings sense to Lydia, who stands with the Handmaids in their resistance. June executes her plan of bringing justice by using a drugged cake at Serena Joy’s wedding.

The execution of the plan went smoothly. The Commanders had the cake and left for their homes. June reached Commander Bell’s house to free Janine. Just as Bell was dozing off, his phone rang loudly, waking him up. The Commander saw June standing in front of him.

Despite the slight interruption, June did not budge. She greeted Bell and stabbed him in the eye within minutes. The Commander’s death essentially meant Janine could finally be “free.”

Will Serena also join June in The Handmaid’s Tale?

Serena Joy has been an instrumental character in Gilead’s foundation. Even after losing a finger and watching her own power taken away in multiple circumstances, she refused to see the truth of the corrupt state. However, Serena’s shock in Episode 8 at learning how her new husband wants a Handmaid may finally do the trick.

In the latest episode, the former wife of Fred Waterford gets to know that her new husband, Commander Wharton, wants to have a Handmaid after their wedding. Serena protested against Wharton’s desires, reiterating that she does not want to have a Handmaid.

Wharton explained that he wants to have a big family, and having a Handmaid might speed up the process. Serena realized that Wharton could be no different than other Commanders and wanted to leave the house with her son, Noah. After a brief interaction with her husband, Serena leaves the house.

Viewers speculate that Serena might join June in the resistance as she finally accepts the truth that Gilead men are mostly the same — people who want to control. As most Commanders die inside Gilead, as per June’s plan, Serena may fight the ultimate battle alongside her to free the Handmaids once and for all.
