Project Hail Mary: Lord and Miller’s Sci-Fi Movie With Ryan Gosling Gets Release Window

Project Hail Mary will be released in United States theaters in 2026.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios has given Project Hail Mary a 2026 release window. The announcement was made at CinemaCon following a preview of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ new Christmas comedy, Red One.

At the same time, the studio also announced The Nickel Boys starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor will be released later this year, while Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt and Bart Layton’s Crime 101 have both been given 2025 release windows.

What do we know about Project Hail Mary?

Project Hail Mary is being helmed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directing duo known for directing movies such as 2009’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 2012’s 21 Jump Street, and 2014’s The Lego Movie. Lord and Miller are also heavily involved in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Verse franchise.

Ryan Gosling (Barbie, The Fall Guy) is attached to star in and produce the movie, while the script comes from Drew Goddard. Project Hail Mary is based on a 2021 novel written by Andy Weir, who also wrote The Martian (which Goddard then adapted into a script for Ridley Scott’s 2015 film).

“Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish,” the synopsis for the novel reads. “Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone. Or does he? An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.”

Project Hail Mary releases in 2026 from Amazon MGM Studios.
