Project Hail Mary has finally debuted on streaming after a strong theatrical run. Within days of its launch on MGM+, the Ryan Gosling-led movie secured a spot on the top 10 list. However, its arrival did not go according to fan expectations, surprising them.
Project Hail Mary ranks #2 on MGM+ charts
Project Hail Mary is currently the #2 title on MGM+ in the United States, only behind From, as of June 23, as per FlixPatrol. It outperforms other movies and TV shows on the list, including The Institute, Reign of Fire, A Working Man, Chapelwaite, Robin Hood, Transformers: The Last Knight, Afterburn, and Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue.
On the other hand, it does seem to be the reigning title worldwide. It outranks six James Bond movies: Daniel Craig’s SPECTRE, No Time to Die, Skyfall, and Casino Royale, and Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough. The film’s viewership also surpasses that of Greenland 2: Migration, The Housemaid, and Roofman.
Distributed by Amazon MGM Studios in North America and Sony Pictures Releasing internationally, the film debuted theatrically on March 20. Following its release, it became a massive box office success, grossing approximately $683 million worldwide (via The Numbers).
It also enjoyed critical acclaim from both critics and audiences for its gorgeous visuals and Ryan Gosling‘s performance, among others. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie boasts a very impressive 94% “certified fresh” critical score and a similarly commendable 95% “verified hot” audience rating. Project Hail Mary’s plot and themes also became subjects of internet memes and discussions, effectively solidifying its place in pop culture history.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name, the story follows Dr. Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher. He awakens on an interstellar spaceship with amnesia, eventually learning that he had been sent on a special mission along with some astronauts: to investigate a mysterious substance causing the sun’s slow death. Grace eventually encounters and befriends an alien on a similar mission, teaming up with the latter to complete their respective missions.
