Joker 2 to Feature Primarily ‘Well-Known’ Songs, Originals Could Be Added

The upcoming DC sequel Joker: Folie à Deux seems to primarily be a jukebox musical, as it will mostly feature existing songs.

Variety has reported that the DC Studios sequel will be “mostly a jukebox musical,” according to its sources. It will reportedly include at least 15 new takes on “very well-known songs,” though the outlet notes that one or two original songs could potentially be added into the film before its completion.

One of the known tracks that will apparently be in Joker: Folie à Deux is “That’s Entertainment” — a song from the Fred Astaire-led 1953 musical The Band Wagon. Additionally, Variety states that each song apparently had composer Hildur Guðnadóttir “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into them.

Who is directing Joker: Folie à Deux?

Todd Phillips is back to direct Joker: Folie à Deux from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver. Released in 2019, Joker became a smash hit, grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, Joker won two Oscars — Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.

Joaquin Phoenix reprises his Academy Award-winning role of Arthur Fleck/Joker for the sequel. Lady Gaga, who plays Joker’s love interest Dr. Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn, will star alongside Phoenix. For the sequel, Zazie Beetz returns as Arthur’s former neighbor, Sophie Dumond. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey were also cast in undisclosed roles. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024.
