Critics Choice Awards 2024: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Wins Top Honor

The exciting lineup of winners for the 29th Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by the Broadcast Film Critics Association included Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Science SARU and Abel Góngora’s animated series proved to be unbeatable, as it won the prize of Best Animated Series.

Aired on Netflix on November 17, the series thrilled fans. It utilized members of its original cast from the live-action film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. This constant continuity only enhanced the charm of an anime that brought together the original film and its animated version.

Bryan Lee O’Malley, the genius behind Scott Pilgrim culture brought this project to life with Grabinski as a second executive producer. Grabinski is famed for his newest Are You Afraid of the Dark? series. Being dual showrunners, the two developed other aspects of staying authentic to its core while foraying new horizons in animation.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off wins the Best Animated Series

In a fiercely competitive category, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off emerged triumphant. It outshined contenders like Bluey, Bob’s Burgers, Harley Quinn, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Young Love. The show was based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s well-known Scott Pilgrim graphic novel. The series topped the animated show charts for both audiences and critics in its year.

Driven by the animation talent of Japan’s Science SARU – renowned for DEVILMAN crybaby, The Heike Story, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! – Scott Pilgrim came to life. In addition to Choi, Abel Góngora, renowned for his contributions to Star Wars, directed the project, inspired by visions of “TO-B1”.

It is also remarkable the executive producers such as Edgar Wright who was both the director and co-writer of the live-action version released in year 2010. Working together with Nira Park, Michael Bacall (co-writer), and Marc Platt Productions’ Marc Platt Jared Leboff Adam Seigel the team brought a host of industry experience and enthusiasm to create Scott Pilgrim versus the World.

In the Best Animated Feature category, The Boy and the Heron directed by Hayao Miyazaki saw a nomination but did not win. Also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, Godzilla Minus One wasn’t successful. Notably, The Best Animated Feature went to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Anatomy of a Fall won for Best Foreign Language Film.

Due to this victory, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has left its mark in the Critics Choice Awards 2024 history and proved that Life of Qi is not only a winning trope. With the fans celebrating this accolade, anime stands proud as a symbol of not just how stories and animation but also concepts are absorbed differently by different mediums.
