Celine Song’s the Materialists Will Be Very Different From Past Lives

Celine Song’s debut film Past Lives is one of the most celebrated movies of the year, and the director is now set to begin production on her second film, The Materialists.

In a recent interview with GQ, Song revealed that her second film is in the works and will begin production sometime soon. The film will once again be backed by A24, and according to producer Christine Vachon, the film won’t be like Past Lives, as Song likes to switch things up.

“It feels like she makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of a filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice,” said Vachon.

Past Lives has continued to garner award buzz

Past Lives premiered at the beginning of the year at Sundance Film Festival and made its theatrical release in June. Following its release, the film gained universal acclaim, and is a favorite to earn a handful of nominations across the end of 2023’s award season.

Prior to Past Lives, Song was a playwright and writer. She wrote the 2020 plays Endlings and The Seagull on The Sims 4 and was also a writer on eight episode of Amazon’s high fantasy series The Wheel of Time series.
