The Marvels Box Office Projections Rise, Still Far Below Captain Marvel

The latest box office projections for the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel The Marvels are in, and despite a rise, they’re still a bit grim.

Deadline has reported that four weeks ahead of its release, The Marvels is tracking to make $75M-$80 million — almost 50% less than the first Captain Marvel movie, which had a three-day gross of $153 million. The outlet notes that the lack of cast promotion as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike is likely part of this result, alongside a potential audience disconnect between Captain Marvel and The Marvels, which stars two other characters alongside the titular hero.

These projections are slightly higher than last week’s, which pitched $50-75 million for the opening weekend, but still substantially lower than the previous Captain Marvel film.

Captain Marvel made $153.4 million during its opening weekend, giving it the record for having the highest opening weekend for a female-directed film (2023’s Barbie then beat it when it opened to $162 million). In total, Captain Marvel grossed $426.8 million at the domestic box office and $1.128 billion at the worldwide box office.

The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) from a screenplay by Megan McDonnell. Leading the movie are Oscar winner Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, WandaVision breakout star Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Additional cast also includes MCU vet Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, and popular South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon.

What is The Marvels about?

“Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads the synopsis. “But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”
