Spellbound: Rachel Zegler-Led Animated Fantasy Moves From Apple to Netflix

According to Deadline, Skydance Animation’s long-in-development animated fantasy Spellbound has officially moved to a new streaming home in the form of Netflix. This comes after over two years since Apple Studios had acquired the rights to the star-studded project. This comes after Skydance Animation had signed a new multi-year development deal with Netflix, following the recent end of their contract with Apple.

In addition to Spellbound, Skydance’s entire existing animated film slate are now set to debut on Netflix. This includes the buddy comedy movie Pookoo, which is now scheduled to be released in 2025. Meanwhile, Spellbound will be available for streaming in 2024, exclusively on Netflix.

Who’s the voice cast of Spellbound?

Spellbound is an animated musical that follows the story of a young girl who must break the spell that has split her kingdom in two. It features the voices of Rachel Zegler as Princess Ellian, Nicole Kidman as Queen of Lumbria, Javier Bardem as King Solon, John Lithgow as royal advisor Minister Bolinar, Jenifer Lewis as royal advisor Minister Nazara Prone, Nathan Lane and André De Shields as The Oracles of the Sun and Moon, and Jordan Fisher as young nomad Callan.

The film is directed by Vicky Jenson (Shrek) from a script co-written by Mulan‘s Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, along with Linda Woolverton (The Lion King). It includes music from Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, which will reunite him with long-time collaborators and fellow Grammy-winners, lyricist Glenn Slater and former Walt Disney Music President Chris Montan, who all worked together on The Little Mermaid and Tangled.
