Jonathan Nolan to Adapt Isaac Asimov’s Foundation for HBO

Previously planned as a Roland Emmerich feature film, an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction novel series, “Foundation,” is heading to HBO with Interstellar scribe Jonathan Nolan producing. TheWrap has the news, reporting that the project is in development from HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

Originally published as a series of eight short stories in “Astounding Magazine” beginning in 1942, “Foundation” offers a complex saga about humans who are scattered on planets throughout the galaxy, living under the rule of the Galactic Empire. A psycho-historian who can scientifically read the future sees an imminent empire collapse, and sets to work preparing to save the knowledge of mankind.

The books originally formed a trilogy (which also includes “Foundation and Empire” and “Second Foundation”), but Asimov wound up completing seven “Foundation” books before his passing in 1992.

HBO and Nolan are already working together on a science fiction television project in the form of “Westworld.” Likely to premiere in 2015, “Westworld” stars Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Ed Harris and many more. Nolan has provided the screenplay, written by himself and his wife, Lisa Joy Nolan.
