One Piece Film: Red Explained: What Is the Rocky Port Incident?

Now that One Piece Film: Red is out, fans may be wondering what the Rocky Port incident that is mentioned in the movie might be. It’s been a while since it was mentioned in the manga, so let’s have a bit of a refresher on the infamous incident.

ComingSoon spoiler alert

What is the Rocky Port Incident?

The Rocky Port Incident occurred during One Piece‘s two year timeskip, which happened between the Post-War arc and the Return to Sabaody arc. The perpetrator of the incident was none other than the temporary Warlord Trafalgar D. Water Law, better know as Law. Though little is known about the incident itself, it involved Law, Marshall D. Teach — better known as Blackbeard –, former Rocks pirate Ochoku, and Marine captain Koby. After local citizens were endangered during the event, Koby protected them dutifully, leading him to be called a Marine Hero — not unlike his mentor, Monkey D. Garp.

Is Koby Good or Bad?

Since Koby is a Marine Hero, newcomers may wonder about whether he’s good or bad. One Piece‘s marines run the gamut of being noble to straight-up villainous, especially since the organization opposes pirates (like the Straw Hats) and protects the deplorable Celestial Dragons. That being said, Koby is much closer to being heroic and noble than someone like Sakazuki or Borsalino. Like Garp, Koby cares more about protecting innocent people and fighting evil individuals than preserving the world order or attaining power. He’s even part of SWORD, the Secret Special Force led by Supernova/Undercover Marine X Drake. SWORD is considered the opposite of the shadier CP0/Aigis group, which Celestial Dragons use to maintain the skewed world order. Plus, Koby is friends with Luffy, which is a good sign.

How are Law and Blackbeard Involved?

During the Rocky Port Incident, Koby apparently teamed up with Blackbeard to defeat Ochoku. As a former member of the fearsome Rocks Pirates — which even included former and present Emperors Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido — Ochoku was assuredly a powerful force to be reckoned with, which necessitated Koby and Blackbeard’s temporary collaboration. This would lead Blackbeard to become the new boss of Hachinosu, the island he is seen on when his crew is confronted by Gecko Moria during the Wano arc. Law was the one who started the entire incident, leading him to be feared by many — especially since he became a Warlord of the Sea shortly after.
