The news comes from THR, which states that Warner Bros. is in “final negotiations” with Momoa over the role. No word yet on who Momoa will play in the film, although there aren’t many named characters in the sandbox game besides the generic main player being known as Steve and Alex depending on the skin being used.

The project will see Momoa reunite with Dune producer Mary Parent, who is producing alongside Roy Lee. The late Jill Messick is also receiving a producing credit for her work on the film prior to her passing in 2018. Executive producers are Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts. Minecraft developer Mojang’s Lydia Winters and Vu Bui are also producing.

The popular video game was released in 2011 and became a global phenomenon. Its success led to Microsoft acquiring Mojang for $2.5 billion. A film based on the series has been in the works for several years with Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney previously attached.
