Dove Cameron & Jordan Fisher to Lead HBO Max’s Field Notes on Love

HBO Max is currently in the process of developing the film adaptation of Jennifer E. Smith’s YA romance novel titled Field Notes on Love, with Golden Globe nominee Lauren Graham attached to co-write the screenplay with Smith. According to Deadline, Dove Cameron (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) and Jordan Fisher (To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You) have been tapped for the lead roles.

This marks Smith’s fourth novel to get a film adaptation, with The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between currently in production. Her 2017 novel Windfall was previously optioned as a movie by Graham.

First published in 2019, Field Notes on Love centers around two strangers who go on a train trip together across America. When Hugo gets dumped by his girlfriend before their long-planned romantic journey, he decides to still go ahead with the trip due to the nontransferable tickets, putting up an ad for her replacement. Meanwhile, Mae is reeling from being rejected from USC’s film school. When she stumbles across Hugo’s ad for a replacement, she’s certain it’s exactly the adventure she needs to shake off her disappointment and jump-start her next film. A cross-country train trip with a complete stranger might not seem like the best idea, but to Mae and Hugo -both eager to escape their regular lives- it makes perfect sense. What starts as a convenient arrangement soon turns into something more. However, life outside the train catches up with the duo, and they must contend with not derailing their feelings for each other.
