October Horror Movie Recommendation: Tower of Evil

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…

Tower of Evil

What’s Tower of Evil about: After a young naked girl is discovered on a remote island in a state of hysteria (and with all her friends murdered), a group of scientists take a trip to the same island to investigate. While there they realize that not only is buried treasure in the mix, but they are not alone amid the foggy terror of the island lighthouse.

Why Tower of Evil rules: This English production, also known as “Horror on Snape Island” and “Beyond the Fog,” is an interesting mix of exploitation elements (blood, boobs, body count) with a pretty nuanced portrayal of intelligent people stuck in a sexually charged situation. The dialogue is pretty engaging between the scientists with a history, but once they start getting picked off the horror doesn’t let up.

How scary is Tower of Evil: There is graphic bloodletting and ample nudity. For a film from 1972 it’s pretty graphic, but also sophisticated in the way it deals with the psychology of both the killer and the victims he leaves alive.

Be on the lookout for: Fans of the Friday the 13th franchise will find many parallels between the killer in this film and Jason Voorhees. Also the early model sequence over the opening credits is stunning.

Where to watch Tower of Evil: The movie is available to rent for $3.99 at Amazon Prime Video. You can pick up your Blu-ray copy by clicking here.
