Seinfeld Streaming Rights: Netflix Nabs All 180 Episodes….Starting in 2021

Netflix and Sony Pictures Television has announced that all 180 episodes of Seinfeld will appear on Netflix for worldwide streaming starting in 2021. All episodes of the series are currently available for streaming on Hulu.

“Seinfeld is the television comedy that all television comedy is measured against,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said in a statement. “It is as fresh and funny as ever and will be available to the world in 4K for the first time.”

The future of the Emmy award winning series’ online presence has been up in the air as various entertainment companies begin to launch and plot their own streaming services. Netflix has already lost streaming rights for The Office and Friends, casualties of the competitive streaming market as both are headed to NBC Universal’s forthcoming streaming service and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, respectively. The Los Angeles times reports that for this new deal Netflix paid “far more than the $500 million” that NBC Universal used to get back streaming rights to The Office.

Seinfeld‘s appearance on Netflix isn’t a huge shock from one perspective as co-creator and star Jerry Seinfeld has been associated with the streaming service for many years, premiering new episodes of his series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and the Grammy nominated special Jerry Before Seinfeld on Netflix. On the other hand it is surprising to see NBC Universal lose out on the series as Seinfeld was the flagship series for the network during its initial run.

An Emmy and Golden Globe winning series, Jerry Seinfeld stars as a cartoonish version of himself in the popular sitcom, often described as “the show about nothing.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards also star in the series.
