The series, created by and starring Jared Keeso, started as a YouTube series entitled “Letterkenny Problems” and follows the antics of a group of characters in the titular rural Canadian town with a population of 5,000 that is home to “hicks, skids, hockey players and Christians,” with a focus on Wayne, his sister Katy (Michelle Mylett) and their two friends Daryl (Nathan Dales) and Squirrelly Dan (K. Trevor Wilson).

Originally premiering on CraveTV in February 2016 and running for six seasons of six episodes each with a holiday special tucked in between each one starting with the hiatus between the second and third season, the series proved to be a hit, receiving rave reviews from critics and being a ratings hit for the streaming service, having been nominated for 20 Canadian Screen Awards and winning seven including Best Comedy Series.

Hulu acquired the U.S. rights to distribute the series in 2018, slowly distributing the seasons over the months following and now they will become the first service to acquire an international show for future seasons after its run on its original network as they have acquired the rights to its upcoming seventh season and any future seasons.

“We know from the current success of our Original comedy series’ Ramy, Shrill and Pen15 that our subscribers are looking for hilarious, unique and engaging programming,” Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals Craig Erwich said in a statement. “Letterkenny checks all of these boxes and then some.  Since we first premiered season one last summer, the fan-following and conversation around the series has gained exciting momentum. We’re proud to have the show join the Hulu family.”

The seventh season of Letterkenny is set to premiere on October 14.
