Russos Explain Captain Marvel’s New Look in Avengers: Endgame

In an interview with /Film, co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo were asked about Captain Marvel’s new look for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame which has caused a debate among some fans. According to the brothers, even though they “set the parameters…in terms of what we need,”  the cast are actually the ones responsible for deciding what makeup and hairstyles are best fit for their characters.

“We give all the actors ownership over there,” Joe Russo said. “Every hairstyle that Scarlet Johansson has had and every movie that we’ve done has come from Scarlet Johansson.”

On the reason why Captain Marvel’s new look was so inconsistent with her original look, Joe Russo added “This was Brie’s first time playing the character. She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

Last year’s Avengers: Infinity War saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
