Stargirl Adds Injustice Society Villains Tigress, Sportsmaster and Dragon King

Stargirl finds her Tigress, Sportsmaster and Dragon King

Hot off the heels of DC’s announcement that Henry Thomas would lay Dr. Mid-Nite in the Stargirl series, Deadline is reporting that the roles of Tigress, Sportsmaster and Dragon King will be played by Joy Osmanski (The Santa Clarita Diet), Neil Hopkins (Matador) and Nelson Lee (Mulan). The trio join Brec Bassinger, who plays the titular hero.

The report also lists descriptions for each character to help viewers familiarize themselves with this new universe.

First up, Tigress, a character first introduced in comic books back in 1947 (though she ran with the moniker Huntress) is described as: “Protecting and providing for her family, Paula Brooks hunts the world’s most dangerous game – humans – as the Tigress.”

Lawrence “Crusher” Crock, aka the Sportsmaster, is an enemy of the Justice Society, described as a man who “sees his criminal pursuits as a game to win — and his competitors as targets to kill. The only thing more important to Crock than ‘the game’ is his family.”

Crock likewise appeared in 1947 in DC’s All-American Comics, and typically sports athletic gear such as rocket-launched baseball bats.

Finally, Dragon King is a super-villain described as “a deadly and mysterious hooded man…this controversial scientist has been experimenting on himself and his victims since the 1940s.”

Dragon King wasn’t introduced until 1981 in DC’s All-Star Squadron as a “former high-ranking scientist and occult expert in the government of Imperial Japan who, after WWII, experimented on himself to horrific effect.”

Stargirl will follow the story of Courtney Whitmore (Bassinger) who is a smart, athletic and above all else kind girl. This high school teenager’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. “Borrowing” the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.

Character creator Geoff Johns will write and produce the series through his Mad Ghost Productions banner alongside Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions. This series is not to be confused with Disney’s forthcoming Stargirl, based on the young adult novels from Jerry Spinelli first published in 2000.
