A Bad Boys spinoff TV series is in development with Gabrielle Union to star
A Bad Boys spinoff TV series is in the works with Gabrielle Union (Being Mary Jane), according to Deadline. The site reports that, though no one has commented officially, the project is being pitched to TV networks and is expected to get a commitment. The Bad Boys spinoff series comes to us from producers Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the Bad Boys movies, and Doug Belgrad, who worked on the franchise as well, through his 2.0 Entertainment and Primary Wave Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV Studios is on board. Executive producing the series would be Belgrad, Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.
The Bad Boys spinoff series will center on Union’s character from Bad Boys II, Special Agent Sydney “Syd” Burnett, who has worked undercover with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Burnett is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence). She and Marcus’ partner Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) were romantically involved. The as-yet-untitled show is written by The Blacklist writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.
Union’s BET series Being Mary Jane is ending next year with a two-hour movie finale. Union is also known for her work in films like Deliver Us from Eva, Think Like a Man and Think Like a Man Too, Cradle 2 the Grave, Neo Ned, Cadillac Records, Top Five, The Birth of a Nation, Almost Christmas and Sleepless. She won an NAACP Image Award for her work in Being Mary Jane.
Bad Boys II came out in 2003 and was the sequel to the first Bad Boys film from 1995. The film grossed $270 million worldwide. It also starred Jordi Mollà, Peter Stormare, Theresa Randle and Joe Pantoliano. A third Bad Boys film entitled Bad Boys for Life was in the works moved off Sony’s schedule in August.
