Can You Dig It? Captain America Directors to Adapt The Warriors for Hulu

Deadline brings word that Captain America: Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo are producing a reimagining of Walter Hill’s cult classic film The Warriors as a television series for Hulu. The Russos will executive produce the series for Paramount TV and work with writer Frank Baldwin to develop the idea. The outlet reports that this new take on the film will “honor the original… while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence.”

Based on the Sol Yurick novel, the Walter Hill film was released in 1979 to some negative reviews but went on to become a classic embraced by audiences. The film follows the titular gang, The Warriors, who are framed for the murder of a powerful gang leader and forced to run from all of the other colorful, cunning, and violent gangs that inhabit the streets of New York City. The gang itself is made up of Michael Beck as Swan, James Remar as Ajax, Dorsey Wright as Cleon, Brian Tyler as Snow, David Harris as Cochise, Tom McKitterick as Cowboy, Marcelino Sánchez as Rembrandt, and Terry Michos as Vermin.

Feature film remakes of The Warriors have been attempted in the past with Tony Scott (Top Gun, True Romance) originally lined up to direct and another version with Mark Neveldine (Crank, Gamer) attached. Neither version was ever filmed.

The Russos will next be directing the two-part Avengers: Infinity War in the fall which are being shot back-to-back in Atlanta, Georgia. Their previous credits include Captain America: The Winter SoldierYou, Me and Dupree, and their Emmy award-winning work on the TV series Arrested Development.
