Sony Classics Acquires Mike Leigh’s ‘Another Year’

The best film of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival to this point is undoubtedly Mike Leigh’s Another Year if you ask me. Smart, witty, tragic, funny and down-to-earth, it just has a quality that keeps you wanting to watch. While it was obvious the film would get picked up after its debut here at the festival I figured it wouldn’t happen until after the Palm d’Or was handed out as it looks to be a current front-runner for the top prize, but it would appear the sale of this one is complete.

Deadline reports Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the film for domestic distribution. It’s only logical as that seemed to pretty much be the obvious choice with Miramax on the shelf since distributing Leigh’s last film, Happy-Go-Lucky.

The current synopsis reads as follows:

Using his trademark production method of improvisation, Leigh will once again deliver a moving and detailed portrait of his characters’ inner lives. This process has yielded some of the finest performances ever put on film, and it has generated an Oscar-nominated screenplay for four of his previous films: Happy Go Lucky, Vera Drake, Topsy Turvy, and Secrets and Lies.

If that isn’t enough for you, give right here.

Deadline also reports Sony Classics is considered a strong candidate to acquire Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful, my second favorite film of the festival so far with that review available right here.
