Sony Pictures Classics Takes The Meddler

Lorene Scafaria’s The Meddler has found a home at Sony Pictures Classics

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will theatrically release The Meddler, starring Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne and J.K. Simmons, in North America. Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), the film will have its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired worldwide rights to the film prior to the start of the production and will distribute internationally.

The Meddler follows Marnie Minervini (Sarandon), recent widow and eternal optimist, as she moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter (Byrne). Armed with an iPhone and a full bank account, Marnie sets out to make friends, find her purpose, and possibly open up to someone new.

“Striking a winning balance of insight, heart, and laugh-out-loud hilarity, Lorene Scafaria’s second feature stars the magnificent Susan Sarandon in one of her most richly satisfying roles,” reads TIFF’s entry on The Meddler. “…Scafaria is a smart storyteller on so many levels: her observations on relationships, ethnic ties, and the difficulties of navigating romance after sixty are uniformly spot-on. Yet this film’s greatest triumph is Marnie — maddening, lovable, and so very fun. This is a role worthy of Sarandon’s tremendous talents.”

In addition to both writing and directing Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, Scafaria scripted Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist and has directed several episodes of FOX’s hit comedy series, “New Girl.”

Rounding out the cast are Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”), Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors) and Michael McKean (“Better Call Saul”). The Meddler is produced by Joy Gorman Wettels of Anonymous Content, with executive producers Susan Sarandon, and Anonymous’ Paul Green and Steve Golin.
