The Hunger Games and Seabiscuit writer/director Gary Ross will next be directing Matthew McConaughey in the Civil War movie The Free State of Jones and TheWrap reports that Belle and Beyond the Lights star Gugu Mbatha-Raw will co-star opposite the recent Oscar winner.
Mbatha-Raw will play a slave named Rachel who has a relationship with McConaughey’s Newton Knight, which forces him to rebel against the Confederacy during the Civil War, in Ross’ passion project based on a true story.
The movie is being produced by Ross with Scott Stuber and John Kilik for STX Entertainment, co-financing the $65 million movie with IM Global and splitting distribution.
Mbatha-Raw will next be seen in the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending, followed by the courtroom drama The Whole Truth opposite Keanu Reeves. She’s also filming Game Brain, the movie about concussions in the NFL, with Will Smith for Sony.
