Legendary Pictures has closed a deal for Jim Mickle to direct the upcoming film Esperanza, based on the book by John N. Maclean with a script by Sean O’Keefe. Legendary’s Alex Hedlund will oversee the project.
Set against the backdrop of one of the most fire-prone areas in the world, Esperanza is the true story of a Spartan culture of firefighters battling the ‘perfect storm’ of wildfires.
Mickle’s most recent credits include Cold in July, a sensation at 2014 Cannes Director’s Fortnight and 2014 Sundance, 2013 Sundance and Cannes Fortnight nominee We Are What We Are and creator, co-writer, EP and director of “Hap and Leonard,” which was recently sold to SundanceTV and set to premiere in 2016.
Sean O’Keefe is currently writing the remake of The Escapist, which is set up at Studio Canal with Rupert Wyatt producing and Liam Neeson attached to star. He has Riders on the Storm at Fox with Davis Entertainment, and Joe Roth and Mir Bahmanyar are producing his 2012 Black List project The Paper Man.
