Dickinson is set during Emily Dickinson’s era with a modern sensibility and tone. It takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of a budding writer who doesn’t fit into her own time through her imaginative point of view. Dickinson, written by Alena Smith (The AffairThe Newsroom), is Emily’s coming-of-age story — one woman’s fight to get her voice heard.

Alongside Steinfeld, the cast features an ensemble roster made up of Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Toby Huss (Halt & Catch Fire), Anna Baryshnikov (Manchester by the Sea), Ella Hunt (Anna and the Apocalypse), John Mulaney (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Wiz Khalifa.

According to the statement released alongside the debut of the track Steinfeld drew inspiration in the writing of the song from her character and the themes of Dickinson’s literary works.

“This record has become one of my favorite songs I’ve worked on and sonically, it’s indicative of the direction I’m exploring with my new music. There’s a line in the song that says ‘immortality is bliss’ and its reminiscent of a lot of Emily’s poems,” Steinfeld said in the announcement. “She lived during a time where women were forbidden from voicing their opinions and restricted in many ways, including how they dressed. I wanted the single art to reflect this idea too so the corset has an exaggerated cinch to represent how Emily in particular felt constricted and stifled.”

David Gordon Green (Pineapple ExpressVice Principals) is set to direct and will also executive produce alongside Smith, Michael Sugar (Spotlight) and Ashley Zalta (Maniac) for Sugar23 Productions, as well as Alex Goldstone for Anonymous Content, and Darlene Hunt (The Big C). The series hails from Paul Lee’s independent studio, wiip.
